Most of us think of peace as a feeling. We want to trade our anxiety, depression, and fear for calm and tranquility. We reach a place where we will do almost anything to find a way out of the turmoil. But Biblical peace starts not with the feeling of peace, but the source of peace — a strong and healthy relationship with God and with others. Sounds a lot like our mission statement here at New Life—to lead people to freedom in a new life in Christ and build healthy relationships.

True joy comes from believing that the one true God is a personal God who is involved in and cares about our daily lives. When we confidently believe that he loves us and is working out a good plan for us, we can rise above our circumstances and find joy in Christ.
Let’s think back for a minute to a time in our lives that most can identify with. Remember when you nervously went in to interview for a job you really wanted? And then that moment when you found out you were offered the position—yes! It’s time to celebrate! Fast forward a few months or years. You’re getting ready to head to work. Do you feel the same sense of happiness? Most likely not. It has become routine. But can you feel joy? Absolutely!

Love dominates God’s story. The Bible is large and complex, but there is one single idea behind everything we read—love. Jesus taught from a place of love. God, quite simply, is love.
It is in our very nature as humans to look out for ourselves and put our own wants and needs above others. When we struggle with selfishness, it is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge how much we truly need God. Living a life of love requires the presence of God’s love and power within us. When we choose to yield to him and receive the great love he has for us, it produces love for others. Only then can we allow the Holy Spirit to empower us as the love overflows.

When we hear the word “resources,” we often find ourselves immediately thinking of money or other assets that have monetary value. As we read the examples in the Bible, it’s evident that our offerings to God are not meant to be confined to money, but can extend to possessions, skills, labor, creativity, and time. It’s not unusual to find stories and examples of people who demonstrated their greatest generosity when it seemed they were in their biggest times of need.

Time is a hot commodity in today’s culture. It seems like we just never have enough. As in most of the challenges we face in our lives, God has a plan in place to assist us in managing time.
We must remember that our time isn’t really “ours” to begin with. God has given us the time we have and it all belongs to him. Every single moment is a gift, so every time we return our time back to him for his purposes, it’s a way of honoring and worshiping him.
Taking a look at our greatest example, Jesus, shows us that there was one person on this earth who never needed to be reminded that his time was to be dedicated to God. Even at a very young age, the Bible tell us how he understood how to best use his time.

When we have the privilege of living in Biblical community, we get to reap the benefits of all of the gifts and skills God has equipped individual members of the Church with. His plan was to make sure that we collectively have what we need to accomplish his purpose and plan. And he planned it out well! Not one of us has all of the spiritual gifts available. He designed us to need each other so we could have fulfillment and pleasure in relationships. As always, it’s our choice. But if we do make the choice to live this way, miracles happen. Lives change. Dreams are fulfilled.

When we think about being single-minded, we just need to break it down into setting priorities. And thankfully, Jesus provided an easy way for us to keep him as our focus. He died on the cross and gave us the choice to embrace him or ignore him. But it’s not all on us! The thankfulness in our hearts gives us access to him and his grace gave us the Holy Spirit to help guide us. What an amazing amount of love he has for us — to know that we can’t do it all alone and to provide just what we need!
Great joy and peace is ours when we keep our priorities straight in this way. Every time a challenge or distraction comes at us, all we have to do is look at it with God as priority and it’s amazing how much clarity it brings in our lives. It doesn’t always make the decisions easier to make, but we know that the outcome will be blessed!

Our relationship with God is what makes the Bible come alive to us. That book of pages with words on it would only be an object if we didn’t love the person who inspired the words. But since we do have a relationship with him, it’s like a personal letter written just for us. It’s his way of saying, “I love you the most!”
So developing the discipline to spend time learning what the Scripture says is just another way of learning how to enjoy the fulfillment of the life God wants for us. In doing so, we learn how to love others around us, how to see ourselves as God sees us, how to be accountable to other believers in our lives, and how to listen for his voice as he gives us direction for our lives.
